STACKIT Cloud Migration, Disaster Recovery and Backup with Hystax Acura

Support-for-STACKIT-with-Hystax-Acura
STACKIT is the sovereign European Cloud of Schwarz Digits, the IT and digital division of the Schwarz Group. It stores data only in its own data centers in Germany and Austria and holds certifications such as BSI C5 Type 2 and ISO 27001. For organizations leaving VMware or reducing their dependence on non-European hyperscalers, it is a natural destination. Hystax Acura now supports the STACKIT Cloud as both a target and a source platform for live cloud migration, disaster recovery, and backup. The platform has its own specific services and API, so instead of relying on a generic OpenStack-compatible layer, Hystax built a dedicated integration with the native STACKIT API for compute, block storage, and networking. As a result, the solution runs the same automated workflows as on any other supported cloud. First introduced in version 4.5, the integration has passed development, QA, and proof-of-concept validation.

Migration to the STACKIT Cloud from VMware, hyperscalers, and other platforms

Hystax Acura is a fully automated any-to-any migration solution. Supported sources include VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, OpenStack and other KVM-based platforms, public clouds such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and physical servers. The most common scenarios are VMware/Broadcom exits and moves from hyperscalers to a sovereign cloud.

Depending on the source, machines are replicated either with an external, hypervisor-level agent that requires no installation inside the guest OS (for example, for VMware and OpenStack) or with an internal agent installed in the guest OS. Workloads keep running while block-level changes are tracked and synchronized incrementally, and STACKIT automatically provisions the target volumes, instances, and networks through the STACKIT API.

Before the final cutover, teams can run unlimited test migrations. Test instances start in an isolated network in the target cloud, so engineers can verify applications, databases, and connectivity while production keeps running, and repeat the test until the result is signed off. The cutover then comes down to a final incremental sync and booting the machines in the new environment.

The STACKIT integration adds no platform-specific limitations. The product offers broad coverage of market-standard operating systems, including Windows Server 2008 R2 through 2025 and Linux distributions such as RHEL, Ubuntu, Debian, SLES, AlmaLinux, and Oracle Linux.

Disaster recovery and backup with STACKIT

Protection works in both directions:

  • STACKIT as the DR site. Workloads running on VMware, Hyper-V, physical servers, or another cloud are replicated there and started if the primary site fails.
  • Protecting workloads that run in STACKIT. Hosted VMs can be replicated or backed up with the internal agent to another STACKIT environment or to any other platform the product supports. The same path lets organizations move workloads out later, so they stay portable.

By default, the RPO is measured in minutes. With Continuous Data Replication enabled, snapshots are created sequentially, so the RPO equals the interval between increments and drops below one minute for both Windows and Linux, depending on how much data changes on the source machines. The RTO is essentially the boot time of the machines, because recovered VMs start directly from replicated volumes, without a lengthy restore step. Recovery plans define boot order, dependencies, and network mappings, and DR drills run in isolated networks without disrupting production.

For backup, restore points are stored in cost-effective S3-compatible object storage, such as STACKIT Object Storage, or on Samba or NFS shares, with flexible retention policies and schedules. With S3 Object Lock, restore points become immutable and cannot be deleted or overwritten during their retention period – a key safeguard against ransomware.

Keeping the whole workflow inside the sovereign cloud

Data sovereignty is often the very reason to choose STACKIT, so the tooling must not undermine it. Hystax Acura can be deployed inside the STACKIT Cloud, with the control panel, replication, and backup storage running in the customer’s own environment. The software works over the network the customer provides, and replication agents only need to reach the controller, not the internet, so the setup also fits closed network environments. If the cloud environment meets applicable regulatory requirements, the solution adds no additional requirements.

Built for enterprises, the public sector, and service providers

Whether an organization moves on its own or through a partner, the goal is the same: moving workloads from VMware or a hyperscaler to a sovereign European cloud. Enterprises and government bodies can run migration, DR, and backup themselves. Managed and cloud service providers can migrate their customers at scale and then protect the same workloads, running all projects from one multi-tenant partner portal with white-labeling and a full RESTful API.

Tested and production-ready

The integration was driven by STACKIT itself. The provider approached Hystax looking for an automated solution for large-scale migrations, anticipating its own growth and the size of future customer projects. Several managed service providers have also reported strong demand from their own customers.

Development, QA, and demos are complete, and several proof-of-concept projects, including one run by an external partner, have finished successfully. Hystax is already a migration automation partner to the STACKIT Cloud Framework, a collection of blueprints, guides, and tools for cloud adoption and migration. Rewion, an official STACKIT Professional & Managed Service Partner, is currently testing the software for its migration projects.
Max Bozhenko

“More and more European organizations want their infrastructure to run under European jurisdiction. Our job is to make the move to the STACKIT Cloud predictable and to keep those workloads protected once they are running.”

— Max Bozhenko, CTO at Hystax
