How Adam Data Center enhanced its OpenStack IaaS with automated migration and disaster recovery

Hystax, Aire Networks, GlobalDots - executive summary

Executive Summary

Adam Data Center is a provider of data center and IaaS services with more than 30 years of experience, supporting its customers in defining and evolving their infrastructure and connectivity. With its own data centers in Madrid and Barcelona, the company combines innovation, sustainability, and 100% proprietary investment capacity to guarantee security, availability, and long-term growth.

Its model is supported by highly qualified technical teams who undergo continuous training, enabling it to maintain full control of its projects and offer flexible, scalable solutions aligned with each customer’s business objectives. More than just a provider, Adam acts as a strategic technology partner.

Hystax, Aire Networks, GlobalDots - goal

The Goal

To strengthen its OpenStack-based IaaS offering, Adam established a partnership with Hystax to incorporate advanced migration and disaster recovery capabilities across any environment or technology.

After a thorough analysis and validation process, Hystax was chosen as a strategic partner due to its high level of integration with OpenStack and its ability to simplify complex processes through automation, operational transparency, and unified service management. The objective was clear: to offer agile migrations and business continuity with maximum technical assurance and minimum operational complexity.

The Challenge

The main challenge was to integrate Hystax technology into an OpenStack environment that was highly segmented by customers, projects, networks, and instances, without affecting production systems.

The implementation required correctly designing each customer’s target cloud, defining domains, projects, networks, volumes, and security policies, as well as ensuring adequate connectivity and access for replication agents. Everything had to be validated automatically before starting any synchronization process.

Added to this was the need to support different sources—such as VMware environments or Windows and Linux systems with agents—while ensuring consistent replication without unnecessary reboots or performance impact. The key was to maintain operational continuity while building a fully functional parallel environment.

Hystax, Aire Networks, GlobalDots - solution

The Solution

The integration represented a significant technical advance for Adam’s OpenStack IaaS platform. A robust and flexible migration and DR service was consolidated, capable of adapting to different levels of criticality and business needs.

The solution allows custom RTOs to be defined using configurable replication policies—from scheduled intervals to near-continuous replication—as well as multiple recovery points to be maintained through initial full copies and automatic incremental deltas.

One of the distinguishing features is the advanced management of DR plans, which allows the boot-up of destination systems to be orchestrated individually, in groups, or globally, respecting dependencies and network configurations. Contingency environments can be deployed and validated without stopping production, facilitating periodic testing and ensuring full operability.

Upon activation, the customer can either maintain the DR environment as a new production environment or perform a reverse recovery to the original infrastructure. In addition, stored copies can be mounted as additional disks to recover specific files in a granular manner.

With this implementation, Adam decisively strengthens its OpenStack IaaS offering, incorporating advanced migration and business continuity capabilities with high levels of automation, control, and flexibility. The result is an infrastructure ready for critical environments, hybrid scenarios, and demanding technological transformation processes.
